A Book Review: Squirrel Meets Chipmunk by David Sedaris

Squirrel Meets Chipmunk is a collection of fables, and way outside the normal real-life essays you expect from Sedaris. I caught a couple of the stories in the audio version of “The Best of Me” which I enjoyed quite a bit, so I knew I wanted to check out the rest of the book which I read on my Kindle.

Think of a modern day Animal Farm and you get the idea.

Overall, I thought the stories were great and I appreciated something different from him. One is about a baboon talking to a cat while doing the cat’s hair in a beauty shop. Another is about a dog and his wife having kids that look nothing like him.

A few are pretty bleak, such as one about a bear mourning its dead mother. David said fans actually thought it was a real story and berated him a bit for it.

It was fun to hear in the interview at the end of “Best of” how people also told David, “I hope you got that out of your system.”

I thought they were great. They are very short, so it takes no time at all to get through the book. Outside of his diary entries, I’d love to see him experiment with something else or release a second edition of fables.
