I went to the Wednesday night open mic again this week, which felt like a regrettable decision soon after the show started. The audience wasn’t warming up and I felt the emcee was really trying too hard and it just wasn’t going to happen.
I decided to do some of my regular solid material, but after watching other regular comics do the same and ultimately come up short I knew it was the audience and there wasn’t much I’d be able to do to change it.
Oh well…
That’s why almost all open mics are forgettable, and that’s not necessarily a bad thing at times. You’ll definitely have more shitty open mics than good ones, and everyone forgets about both!
Next week I’m headed back to my regular Tuesday mic. It’s a show up / sign up mic so there’s a chance I won’t make the list. That is one good thing about the Wednesday mic is that you sign up in advance and know a few days ahead of time if you made it. I signed up for it next week already because the club is under new management so I want to continue to be “seen” there for a while in hopes of eventually getting a hosting spot.
My father was a comedian back in the early 1900s. I found an article about his where he told the reporter that seeing a fellow comedian boo’ed off the stage made him sad. He was in vaudeville, burlesque and old time radio on “Duffy’s Tavern”. Came up through the ranks. It’s good you show up.
