If you look at the top right side of the photo, you’ll see a white critter jumping out of frame. No, that isn’t a ghost. And it isn’t a cat either. It’s the elusive white squirrel of the south! This is only the second time I’ve ever seen one in person. And it’s impossible to get close enough to take a decent photo without them running away, unlike the squirrels in my backyard that don’t fear you at all.
What’s funny about this is when I lived in Tennessee and was growing up, there were no squirrels around at all. That’s probably because everyone had a dog and everyone had a BB gun. The dogs were free to roam where they chose, and the boys made good use of the guns. These days dogs are fenced in or chained up in the back yard, and boys don’t play with guns. Little boys don’t even roam the neighborhood like we did way back then. So, the squirrels have no predators to worry about and have moved back in.
