Weighing In On Week 1

375x321_lose_weight_fast_how_to_do_it_quickly_ref_guideThe only New Years resolution I made for myself this year was to get back into the gym and back into shape.  Last year I stopped going to the gym somewhere around February, and quickly put back on all the weight I’d lost. By the end of the year, I felt quite miserable health-wise.

But this year is going to be different!

The Friday before New Year’s I signed back up at the gym, and I started New Year’s day. I switched gyms this time so I could go to one closer to work. It costs a bit more, but was totally worth it because now I don’t have to waste 30 minutes after work just to get there.  And traffic is not a pain either!

I went 3 days last week, slowly getting myself acclimated to the routine again. I weighed in at 258 that first day, and when I weighed myself this morning I was at 255 on the home scale. Prior to this, the most I had weighed before was around 245, and I actually got down to 227 before I stopped going.

With this comes new eating habits.  In the past, I wrote down my calories in a notebook each day.  While that helped me to learn about controlling my calorie intake, that was about it.  This time I wanted something to help me a step further.  I found it on my Kindle Fire with an app called My Fitness Pal which was completely free. I love it!  Not only can I access it on my Kindle, but I can also go to myfitnesspal.com on my computer and log in there.

You can track your food (carbs, calories, sugars, and protein) by meal each day, and you can also track your exercise and calories burned.  You can study your information by day and week in charts and breakdowns.  You can even input recipes to help you add up calories per serving!  It helps you control your calorie count each day, and at the end of each day it tells you how you are doing overall.

Here’s a snapshot of my food for today. The breakfast menu may seem a bit odd.  I had a veggie omelet and only just learned about the recipe tool this afternoon that I could have used to figure that out by serving instead of by ingredient.


J and I also took a brisk walk in the park today for 20 minutes which burned approximately 146 calories.  It felt great.  For lunch, we made a new healthy recipe which you can see above – J’s Italian Chicken Pecan Pasta.  I used the recipe feature on the site to add the ingredients up to get a more accurate calorie count.

So, this year is off to a great start.  Looking ahead, I plan to blog about my weight loss experience each Saturday and hope I can inspire someone along the way. If anyone else is using My Fitness Pal, feel free to friend me and we can motivate each other!
