Ohhhh, Barnabas!

Jonathan Frid as Barnabas

I have to admit I’m very excited to see the new Dark Shadows film directed by Tim Burton, starring Johnny Depp as Barnabas Collins, which is due out this May.

Here’s the Synopsis of the movie from its Wikipedia page:

In 1752, the Collins family sails from Liverpool, England to North America. The son, Barnabas, grows up to be a wealthy playboy in Collinsport, Maine and is the master of Collinwood Manor. He breaks the heart of a witch, Angelique Bouchard, who turns him into a vampire and buries him alive. In 1972, Barnabas is accidentally freed from his coffin and returns to find his once-magnificent manor in ruin. It is occupied by dysfunctional Collins descendants and other residents, all of whom have secrets.

Several actors from the TV soap opera will appear in the movie as party guests at a ball, including Jonathen Frid who played the original Barnabas. The show ran from 1966 to 1971, and had been off the air for 5 years by the time I was born. However, it ran in syndication on PBS for many years to come and I still remember sitting down with my sister after school to watch it.

Though I love the Depp/Burton duo and every film they make together, I wasn’t so sure I’d like Depp as our beloved vampire. But after seeing the photos of him, as what appears to be a much younger Barnabas, I have to say I’m looking forward to his performance!  It’s nice to see they kept those infamous bangs rather than giving him a makeover.  I’m also hoping they stay true to the musical elements or at least pay homage to them because the music was a big part of what made the show so scary!
