Best. Weekend. Ever.

Despite being in pain all last week with my foot and finally breaking down and having to go to the doctor on Friday only to discover I had a severely pulled tendon, I had a great weekend!  My sister and her family came up to visit Friday and stayed all weekend.  It’d been about four years since their last visit.  And surprise!  They brought my Mother with them.  This was the first time my Mom had ever seen our house!  Needless to say, the foot didn’t matter anymore.  We had a great weekend even despite me having to be pushed around the St. Louis Mills mall in a wheelchair.

Friday after they arrived, I showed Mom the house and the garden.  Then, we had dinner at Ameristar and took my niece to see The Bookhouse.  Saturday after a home cooked breakfast we hit Thies Farm and Pumpkinland, Gamestop for my Nephew, The St. Louis Mills Mall, and then I took everyone to see the Arch.  Saturday was also my sister’s birthday so we fixed dinner at home – a lasagna especially for her and cake.  Breakfast again Sunday morning before they had to hit the road for the three hour trip back home.

But it was a great weekend overall and is always nice to have family visit.  My mother coming along and surprising me made it even more special!  My niece and nephew were both on Fall Break from high school and college, and tomorrow is my niece’s 20th birthday, so I am sure they enjoyed the weekend as much as I did.

It was definitely a nice pick-me-up and made me forget all about my foot!  Love ya, Gang!  Hope you had a blast!

The Lawnmower Man

I’m not sure if I’ve blogged about it before, but we’ve hired and fired about six or seven different lawn mowers over the past four years ever since we’ve lived here.  They mowed down flowers.  They cut ruts in the yard.  Various reasons. The latest one, and only one we’ve had this year, cut down flowers and didn’t do a good job at weedeating the way we wanted him to.

So, yesterday, J decides he wants to buy a mower and weed eater.  Home Depot was having a sale.

So, he mowed and weed eated yesterday and the yard has never looked better.

At $200 for both, they will be paid for in 8 mowings.  (We typically paid $25 a pop for a mowing!)  At the rate our yard grows, that will be in less than two months.

We also finished up a lot of other landscaping projects this weekend…hanging baskets, more annuals for the empty flower pots, rose bushes and trellises.  You know there will be pics to follow.  For now, here’s a pic of J hard at work with his new mower and a nice wide shot of the backyard.

Thoughts on a 3 Day Weekend

Well, it’s been a nice weekend.  It’s hard to believe it’s come and gone and today is my last day here in Dyersburg, but nonetheless, it was a nice getaway considering I haven’t been home to see the family since early November.

Having only packed tee shirts for the trip, I was a bit surprised (and cold) yesterday when I stepped outside in the freezing wind. Yesterday was brr brr chilly.  As I write this, it appears the sun is shining this Sunday morning, but I haven’t stepped out yet to check the temp.

Yesterday we hit three plant nurseries in the area because I wanted to check prices on flowers.  Yes, I went shopping for flowers of all things in the cold weather.  I did not buy anything though.  After that, we went to Dyer County High School to their plant sale.  There was a bake sale going on for ROTC and Mom walked away with two cakes.  Needless to say, I fell off the dieting train just a bit this weekend.

We had a late lunch yesterday with my father.  It was his 70th birthday.  Gotta love my dad!  He shows up at 8am.  (Lunch was supposed to be at 3pm.)  And he leaves by 3:15 right after eating.  Oh well!  It’s always good to see him and visit with him, and he did give me $20 for my birthday which is next week.

After eating, we went back to Mom’s to decorate eggs – something we had not done in years.  I had mentioned yesterday that we should do it just to have fun.  My mom and sister looked at my like I was crazy, so I called them Easter Scrooges.  While my sister and I were out shopping for stuff for dad’s lunch, I picked up an egg decorating kit and some eggs for the heck of it.  When we got back to Mom’s, she had done the same!  Great minds think alike.  So, Mom, Sis, my niece, and I sat down and decorated two dozen eggs and had a lot of fun doing it!

Today Mom is cooking lunch for “my birthday” before I have to leave and head back to St. Louis.  These last day meals typically consist of her famous white spaghetti.  I don’t even remember the last time she made regular spaghetti because the family loves the white spaghetti so much.  I’ll leave mid-afternoon to drive the three hours back home to hesistantly greet another week of work in the Lou.

The days in general go by so fast.  It’s hard to believe April has almost come and gone.  Next week is Easter.  J is gone for an entire week to Boston for training next week.  I am gone three days the following week for a business trip to Ohio.  And look!  It’ll already be May!!

I remember growing up when summers were long and school days were even longer.  We had only our next birthday or holiday to anxiously cross off the calendar for.  And now we dread for the birthdays to come.  Each work week passes from one to the next in a blur.

If you are young and you are reading this and you often complain about how slow the days go by, I urge you to cherish every snail-like second.  Enjoy them while you can!  Yes, they are long.  18 years of your life!  Don’t piss them away.

Because one day, you’ll have only a long weekend to spend with your family, or only lunch for Dad’s birthday, or you’ll be buying a cake in your old high school and not seeing any faces you know, and you’ll stop in awe and remember that you graduated 17 years ago.  And you’ll wish for youth again while remembering those good ole days.

And you’ll think to yourself, “My how time flies!”

American Antiquers

With cabin fever on Saturday after all the snow, J and I ventured out to the Antique Mall at FeeFee and Olive.  We’ve gone in search of many things at this favorite location over the years.

We picked up our dining room chairs and a side table there just before we moved into our house four years ago.  It’s hit or miss sometimes, depending on what you are looking for.

But on a day like Saturday with time to kill, we took our time wandering around and browsing the consignment booths. With cell phone in hand, I just had to snap some photos of oddities that caught my eye, like these two old typewriters.

I remember my sister having one of the old manuals when I was kid.  I used to love to bang on it, and even learned how to type on one in high school until I showed excellent home key skills and got bumped to an electric typewriter in the back of the room.

The top photo is a Smith Corona, complete with carry case!  It makes me think of Dolly Parton in 9 to 5 for some reason.  The bottom one is a Royal, which I envision sitting on a bookshelf in an office or library somewhere as a conversation piece.  Definitely antiques, wouldn’t you say?

Speaking of antiques, this place really only has about 30% of that.  There’s lots of things that look like antiques, but there’s lots of clothes, necklaces, coins, toys, stuffed animals, furniture, artwork, and Elvis taking up the other 70% of clutter.

Do you still have a VCR?  If so, you can get VHS tapes galore here.  Let’s not forget record albums and CDs too.  Some are priced decently, and some not so decent.  For instance, a Village People record album caught my eye for which I would have gladly paid $5 bucks for just for the sleeve, but it was marked $35.

In one case, there was Michael Jackson (and Elvis) media galore.  The Thriller album at the top was marked $125.  I remembered owning this album as a kid, for which I think my parents paid about $15 for at Wal~Mart.  Notice the Playboy with Latoya on the second shelf, and poor poor Elvis down below on the third shelf.

Sweetbreads Not Included!

Like I said, it ain’t all antiques.  There’s one booth full of movie toys, posters, and figurine collectibles.  I couldn’t resist snapping a photo of the Hannibal Lecter action figure!  Complete with hard cart for just $10.  Unfortunately, I could not find chianti or fava beans.

Most days we’ve spent here consist of just a quick walk through, but I really did enjoy taking my time today, attempting to just soak it all in.  There’s so much junk to look at.

I took pleasure in some wooden cigar boxes for just $3 in one booth, old sepia family photos in another, and then stopped to read letters written on old postcards from vacations of long ago.  Sue Ellen and Marty sent Grandma Bertha a lovely beach front postcard from the Keys.  It had a 5 cent stamp on it and was postmarked 1957.

I almost felt like an American Picker!  Love that show!  These pirate face wall hangings were begging to come home with me.  Instead, I chose to immortalize them with a photo. I’m sure if you looked around, Captain Jack was hiding somewhere.  Like I said, there’s lots of pop culture and current century icons lingering about amongst the Santa Clauses, Ty Beanies, Marilyn Monroe collective plates, Aunt Jamima bottles, and porcelain angel figurines.

I also fell in love with this Wizard of Oz mod looking artwork depicting it being shown at a Drive-In movie theater.  Upon closer inspection, it was the collage of stuff around it that I liked even more.  A bull statue, a chicken Elmo, and a vintage counter top snow cone maker.  You can’t make this shit up!

J spotted bags of Green Army Men which also got my crafty juices flowing.  I used to melt those in the microwave, blow them up with firecrackers, and run over them with the lawn mower.  What could I possibly do with hundreds of them now? There’s enough of just about anything you can think of throughout the place which you could hoard if you wanted to.

Since I collect Santa Clauses, each and every one peaked my attention like spotting rare birds out in the field.  You’d be overwhelmed with Pez Dispensers and Baseball Cards, and then suddenly – WTF?  OMG!  Will ya look at that?  It’s a Hallmark Precious Moments Santa Baby from 1993 – still in its box!  And only $20 bucks, although it originally sold for $7.

JFK and Shirley

And speaking of crafty, there are mix matched nativity pieces everywhere!  Call me Daryl Hannah from Steel Magnolias – but I see a Baby Jesus Wreath on my front door real soon!

J was in search of that “special something” that he just had to have.  In one case, there were lots of 1904 World’s Fair souvenirs, but the price tags were pretty hefty.  I spotted a JFK Salt and Pepper shaker in another, only $12, but it was missing it’s other half.   Perhaps that was a Lee Harvey Oswald Pepper Grinder?  The blue Shirley Temple mug next to JFK in his rocker was hoot though!

I REALLY wanted this table!!

Did Joseph and Mary stop at Micky Dees?

I haven’t even begun to talk about all the furniture!  It’s mostly side tables or buffets, some chairs and rockers, and lots of brass.  I did spot an old baby carriage.

The little 3 drawer night table we got there several years ago was a steal at just $30 bucks!  On this trip I saw a small side entry table which someone had handpainted in a bird motif.  I would have loved to have brought it home but at $199 and in a booth that wasn’t on sale, I left it behind. :-(

Tiger? Is that you?

Did I mention I saw Tiger Woods there?  Yep, right next to some antique moonshine jugs.

And toys! Toys, toys, toys!  Again, some new and some old.  I saw two or three of those old Ronald McDonald flat dolls.  Every booth had at least one Ty Beanie in it.  Old Barbies and Action Figures are everywhere to be found too.

I had a stuffed animal fetish growing up and spotted several that I had owned way back when included Patington Bear – and a mini one at that.  But he seemed drunk because he was hanging out with Humphry Bogart.

I love piggy!

A fat red piggy bank covered in Valentines hearts with glitter lips just dripped vintage and squealed with delight at coming home with me.  I didn’t bring home the bacon though!

Patington poses with Bogart!

And who can forget Fisher Price!  In one booth alone I spotted several classic toys I had owned including a wobbly Snoppy Dog with a shoe in his mouth on a spring and he creaked when you pulled him across the floor on his string.  And the Fisher Price barn with the door that mooed when you opened it!  Oh what fun!  I opened it just to hear it moo, but sadly all the lil figurines that could fit inside were no where to be found.

Fisher Price Heaven

They even had the telephone with the moving eyes.  And I found a clunky barn shaped necklace with a crank. When you turned it, it played The Farmer and the Dell jack-in-the-box style and had the words to the song printed on the barn.  And to think some little kid wore this around his neck in the Church Nursery during Sunday Service.  That kid was probably me!

I think it was a requirement for every booth to have something related to Star Wars too. It might be a book or a movie, or keychain or action figure, or collectors VHS tape, or limited edition plastic thingy shaped like Darth Vader’s head.  There were lots of those.

PEZ!

Oh, and let’s not forget Pez again!  Every booth had a Pez dispenser.  Most had been opened.  I did spot a three pack of vintage Chirstmas Pez Dispensers, and snapped this photo of one booth that had lots of old Pez friends still in their original packaging.  Check out that one that comes with a plastic body sleeve!  Totally cool!  My friend Amy used to give me a Pez dispenser for every holiday for a couple of years.  I’m sure I still have them somewhere.

And I have to mention books.  While I didn’t drool too much over them, they are indeed everywhere.  Lots of Grisham and King.  In an antique store?  Yep!  You just can’t get away from them.  And romance paperbacks everywhere you turn.  Some booths had more books than others.  I didn’t dig too deep on this trip. But a 1957 Tarzan book got me all hot and bothered when I pulled it out.  Check out the hottie on the cover!

There are vintage mags everywhere too.  Lots of People, Hunting Magazines, and Playboy.  Yes, Playboy – not just with LaToya either.  And not wrapped in plastic so you might want to hide your eyes.  Or you might just want to buy a few bring them home, draw a hot bath, and put on your Liberace records.  What?  You don’t have any Liberace records.  Well, why didn’t you say so?  The Antique Mall has those too!

Brooks and Dunn look puzzled.

Don’t like to read?  No worries.  Let’s put a puzzle together.  How bout one of Brooks and Dunn?  Oh forget that, this one’s already put together for you!  And wrapped in plastic and everything, ready to hang on the wall.  The vintage print behind it of the adults gathered around the screaming child begs for attention, don’t it?

One of the most interesting things I saw, which I would have loved to have purchased outright, was a small display case filled with small cast iron figurines, complete with lead paint and all.  I recently saw a collection of these go for around $500 on Auction Kings.  Most of these at the Antique Mall were soldiers of all kinds, however, there was a collection of four Gone With The Wind characters including Rhett and Scarlet.  You could buy all four for just $58.

From a Romeo and Juliet wooden cigar box for $3.00 to a sepia photo of pall bearers carrying a casket (also $3.00), to my JFK Salt Shaker for $12 or Valentine Piggy Bank ($?), I could have come home with quite an array of odd and peculiar things.  J even offered to buy a cigar box for me because they were in a booth where all items were half off.  I declined his offer and we left empty handed.

But my cell phone came home full of pictures and I laugh out loud to myself now as I look at them.  Just the trip down memory lane when I see a certain movie on VHS or a certain toy that I enjoyed as a kid was plenty enough for me.

2011 Resolutions

For the past three years, I haven’t really made any resolutions other than to lose weight, and I always break those kinds of resolutions anyway.  2010 being no different.  I’ve been thinking of what resolutions, or “challenges” as I like to call them, I want to make for the new year and here they are.

  1. I’m definitely going to get back into the gym this year.  It’s the only way I’m going to lose weight and get in shape is if I’m paying to do it.  I’m not setting a weight loss goal though at this time because I probably will wait till after January to join.  I’ll let all the other people who put the gym on their resolution list get out of the way first before I start!
  2. It wouldn’t be a new year without a new reading challenge.  2010′s goal was 30 books.  I passed it with 42 books read.  I’m shooting for 50 next year, but will be happy with at least reaching 40 again.  Of course, I’ll be keeping track of them by reviewing the books here on my blog and keeping a Listmania list over at Amazon.  Here’s my 2010 list if you are interested. Amazon only lets you list 40 items per list, so I deleted two books that I didn’t even finish reading because they were horrible.  My 2011 list will also include books I read for LLBR and from my Kindle.  I never included LLBR books before unless they were books I chose on my own. I’ll be starting my list with A Christmas Carol which I read over the holiday.
  3. Blog more!  I always say I’m going to do this but the gaps between posts grow and grow thanks to all the other activities I’m involved in.  Hopefully, I’ll cure that with my next two challenges:
  4. I’m starting a new blog in 2011.  The St. Louis Bookstore Review.  I probably won’t do it all in one year, but I’m going to visit every bookstore in the city (chain, indie, textbook, religious, etc.) and review them. This is a new project I’m very excited about so I hope you’ll follow along and share the blog with others.
  5. Pie challenge!  After my killer pumpkin pie back at Thanksgiving, I’ve decided to do a pie challenge next year.  I’m going to bake a new pie each month and blog about it.  I’ll share the recipe, take photos, and report back.  I’ll experiment with homemade, premade, and frozen crusts.  Fillings, holidays, baking, and more. And of course…taste tests!
  6. Couponing!  Definitely going to keep this up since I did such a good job of it this year.  But in 2011, I’m shooting for $1500.  That’s only $500 more than my previous goal, and only $300 more than where I ended 2010 at in savings. I’m also keeping track of the coupons again, but in 2011 I’m doing it in a spreadsheet rather than by hand like I did in 2010.
  7. As part of #6, I’m going to try to cut down my spending on groceries in general. More about that in my next post where I examine my spending habits for 2010.

And that’s about it.  Like I said, I’m not really resolving to do anything, just challenging myself to do things better.  We should be resolving to do that every day, right?  So…let the fun begin!

The Week End Review: I see you shiver with antici-

Will Schuester (Matthew Morrison) bares all!

It’s hard to believe another week has come and gone.  It seemed slow at first but being only a 4 day work week for me, now that I look back it wasn’t so bad. Sunday night I arrived back in town just in time for our favorite shows…of which Dexter sucked AGAIN!  This show is headed downhill fast.  Who’s with me on this?

On Monday we took our middle dog to the vet for a teeth cleaning.  I planted some of the bulbs that had come in on Monday. The biggest upset on TV that night was Cathy telling Paul she had cancer (Finally!) on The Big C.

I returned to work on Tuesday with 99 emails in my inbox, enough that kept me busy for two days straight catching up. The Rocky Horror Glee Show was nothing spectacular on Tuesday.  The musical numbers were great, but the storyline in between the songs sucked.  Had they just skipped a storyline all together and just did Rocky, it would have been much better. But I must say…Lookin’ good Mr. Schue!  ;-)

I also finally got the files straightened out and corrected for my new book and was able to order the second proof.  I’m shivering with anticipation that it will arrive in the mail today or tomorrow, and that it WILL BE the final proof!  Fingers crossed!

Wednesday was the annual Chili/Dessert Cook Off at work.  J made his his infamous chocolate cake with black walnuts and cherries for me to enter.  Sadly, we didn’t even place.  ;-(  First place in the desserts actually went to someone who made the Neiman-Marcus urban legend cookies! I think next year I’ll enter my fava bean chili and serve it with a nice chianti!  No, I’m not mad.  I’m not mad. 8-/

Last night was another great episode of Big Bang.  But then I found myself getting really tired and retired to bed by 9pm. I bought Halloween candy yesterday and decided this year I was going to buy stuff we like.  We only had about 10 kids stop by last year, and I anticipate even less this year with Halloween being on a Sunday.  So, my candy bowl is full of Snickers, M&M’s, and Reese’s Apples and Dental Floss.

It got down in the mid-30s last night in temp.  We actually turned the heat on to break the chill in the house!  I may have to break down and finally wear long sleeves to work today – the first time this year!!

There’s a Halloween fun day at work today.  Sadly, I’m not dressing up this year although I wanted to be Lady GaGa.  They didn’t announce the party till Tuesday of this week so there just wasn’t enough time to plan.

Tomorrow, I’m finishing up the bulb planting outside (hopefully).  I’ll probably put up a few Halloween decorations…not too much.  Don’t want to entice too many kids to come looking for candy.  Muhahahahaha!  And J and I will watch our DVD of all the Halloween episodes of Roseanne – an annual tradition for us!  I’m also thinking a bowl of potato cheese soup sounds good this weekend!

And that’s my week-end review.  Happy Halloween folks!

The Week End Review

It’s been a while since I posted one of these week wrap-ups.  Not really sure why I’m doing it now either.  This week offered nothing extraordinary, but I felt the need to post something.

It started on Sunday (don’t most weeks).  We made chili which was nice.  Watched Amazing Race.  Our favorite shows, Paranormal State and Psychic Kids, kicked off their seasons that night.  PS was okay.  PK was great, but Chip Coffey always is.  Then, a new episode of Dexter, which was okay.  I have no idea where this show is going and I’m afraid its close to jumping the shark.

Monday was day two of inventory for me at work.  That wasn’t too bad.  I always look forward to doing something different. TV that night was Little People, Big World where Matt Roloff really pissed me off, but when does he not make a fool of himself?  The family, dog, is getting old and suffering from arthritis really bad. The family is struggling with the idea of having to put him down.  Matt said they’d do it themselves, just like in Old Yellar.  No joke!  His wife stood her ground at least, and said no, they’d do it a more humane way.  But geez…what an idiot!  The Big C also came on Monday.  Spoiler! Paul asked Cathy for a divorce after seeing her making out with the painter from school she’s been seeing!  I really love this show!!

Glee and Raising Hope were reruns on Tuesday, so we skipped those.  Looking forward to the new shows next week, particularly the Rocky Horror Glee episode!  J loves the Little Couple which plays on Tuesday.  Discover loves their “little people,” don’t they?  They should find some little people with eight kids, who are cooks, part-time loggers and home renovators, and dump them off in the woods to see if they could survive.  There’s a show!  I’d watch!!

Wednesday was Survivor.  I don’t really pay attention to this show much anymore.  Followed by Storm Chasers.  Did you watch?  Reed is such a turd, isn’t he?  God, he gets on my nerves.  His group were in Yazoo City helping people hit by the tornado there earlier this year.  Very dramatic, and would have been better had Reed shut up a bit.

Last night we watched my fav, Big Bang.  J watched Outsourced.  Then, we closed the night with Nikita.  That’s pretty much our TV recap for the week!  LOL

In other news, I’m still reading Fearful Symmetry.  I’m about half way through.  Hope to finish it by the end of the month.

Did some major couponing yesterday with two trips to the grocery store and one trip to Walgreens.  Spent about $90 dollars total and saved $70!  I love that!

And as for the latest news on my book?  Still at a stand still basically while the printer lets me know what’s wrong with the cover this time.  There are issues there and I’m just waiting to find out what they are.  For now, you can read it on Kindle or Nook if you wish for just $2.99.  The big launch will of course be when the paperback is available.  Fingers crossed…should be just a few more weeks.

I’m on vacation today and Monday.  Jumping in the shower shortly and going to Dyersburg for three days to see the family.  My sister, brother, and niece all have October birthdays.  Also taking some extra daffodil bulbs to Mom and helping her dig up her banana trees for the season.  Should be a nice visit.  I’ll be back on Sunday.

And that’s my week end review!
