  • I always sleep better the second night in Toledo, probably from being exhausted after travel, time change, lack of sleep the first night, and work.
  • Why are hotel televisions so hard to navigate?  I definitely prefer CST when it comes to my TV shows.
  • Free breakfast. Short day at buyback. Late lunch/Early dinner at IKEA in Detroit: cold fries, okay meatballs, broccoli soup (mine’s better), some dessert with a name I can’t pronounce nor remember.
  • I’m thinking tea lights this summer. Definitely tea lights.
  • Flight delayed 30 minutes.
  • I bought the next Stieg Larsson book at the Detroit airport bookstore!  And have already read 50 pages.  Couldn’t focus much on the plane because…
  • A 42 year old drinker/smoker loud mouth bragger sat behind me on the plane. All he talked about was how many Kid Rock concerts he’d been to and how drunk he got and his 13 year old daughter and all the concerts he takes her to and how he made $97K last year as a janitor.
  • I’m home!

• So happy to see Hampton went back to Purity Basics bath products. I love the moisturizer and will definitely be swiping it.
• Free breakfast! Rude students! Long day!
• Dinner: Mexican at a place called Cinco de Mayo. So glad it wasn’t. Great food though.
• 24 hours till my flight home.

  • Bah!  The only thing I forgot to pack was a book!  I wanted to trade in my copy of Girl With the Dragon Tattoo at the airport bookstore. They have a Read and Return program for 50% credit.  I was going to trade it in for the next book in the series. Oh well…I’m still going to go ahead and buy the next one anyway.
  • This morning while still in the St. Louis airport, I was 3 inches away from being hit over the head by a wet ceiling tile that fell apart and crashed to the floor just as I was in the store buying a Coke. My bag, pants leg, and shoe got wet…not too bad but it was a very close call right before having to board my plane.
  • On the plane, I sat behind a black cowboy….big cowboy hat, boots, buckle, even a brown bandana tied around his neck. When we stepped off the plane, an attendant actually sang out, “I wanna be a cowboy, baby!” I refrained from Village People jokes though I did want to ask.
  • Ate lunch at Tony Packo’s: cabbage roll, hot dog, chili, fried pickles.
  • Bought a bird paper weight in Perrysburg.

  • Checked in for my Toledo flight tomorrow. Always a relief to get a good spot in line for a good seat! What’s the best seat on an airplane?  I like a few rows from the back, window seat, no emergency exit row. Takes longer getting off the plane, but I’m comfortable there.
  • Bought some nice ink pens today just for my trip. Yep, I get excited about nice ink pens.
  • Really enjoyed Glee’s version of Shake It Out.
  • Packed for Toledo.

I Need A Doctor!

Last Friday I visited a primary care physician for the first time. Yes, it’s true I haven’t had a regular doctor of my own since the small town practitioner I saw as a child whose office was out of his house and who saw us once a year when we got the flu or cold.  I think the last time I saw him was when I had the measles or chicken pox. His name was Doctor White by the way, and I attended grade school with his grand daughter. She had chicken pox at the same time I did.

In the past, I’ve been lucky enough not to have to see a doctor.  I’ve treated my annual cold or stomach flu with over the counter meds. And only recently did I go to an Urgent Care clinic – once for bronchitis and another time for a bum foot that I had sprained.  I’d say I’ve lived a pretty healthy life.

But turning 36 this year got me to thinking it was probably time to find and see a regular doctor. I admit I was nervous at first, but opened up once I met the doctor.  I discussed my health and concerns with ease.  He even wrote a prescription for me for another med to help with my foot, which has still given me a bit of pain since the fracture I had last October.

After taking two vials of blood, I left feeling really good about myself and for having done this. I also learned I knew my correct weight, but had writing down my height wrong all these years.  I always said I was 6’1″, when in fact I’m 5’11″ (and a half).  So I’ve been wrong all my life or was mismeasured at some point or I shrunk.

Today, I got my results from the blood work.  My glucose was in good shape which means I’m not diabetic.  My cholesterol was slightly off, but not in the need of medication at this time. My good cholesterol was well….good, and my bad cholesterol was not too terribly bad, but it could be better. I also tested negative for HIV, which was very important to me being a gay man.

In the end, I felt really good about taking this step for myself to being healthy and knowing what condition I’m in.  And of course, getting good results made it even better. I’d highly advise anyone else out there who doesn’t have a primary care physician to seriously consider taking this step. Ask your friends or loved ones to give you a referral, or check with your HR office about local doctors in your area.

Having a regular physician who knows you is important.  It will also save you time and money when you do become ill.  To visit Urgent Care, I have to pay a $50 deductible.  My new physician only charges $30. Now, when I’m sick I have peace of mind that I have a doctor to contact who will know my history and my health.  And for that, I know my own health better as well.

366 of Me: Day 16

My chest of drawers for socks, underwear, and tees.  It’s called Harlequin. Also from Pier One, purchased when I worked there in Memphis so I’ve had it at least 11 years if not more.  I have always liked its sleek look, being tall and slender. I have a matching mirror and half-moon hall table in the basement. It’s in great shape, with no scratches, considering how many times it’s been moved around.

366 of Me: Day 15

Yep, another box.  An alabaster jewelry box from Pier One that I bought on clearance when I worked there.  I had to check the contents when I snapped the photo – some random wallet photos, a necklace I never wear, and a strange post-it with someone’s phone number written on it.  No name. Just a number. There’s also a fortune cookie fortune inside that says: “You show your true face to the people who really matter.”
