Day 9: Book That Makes You Sick

Well, this one almost got posted yesterday as the book that scared me.  I decided to post it here instead.

And I want to make this clear…I don’t mean this book makes me sick as in it is bad and made me ill.  Let’s just say some of the scenes are so horrifying, they definitely make you uncomfortable.

I’m talking about Poppy Z. Brite’s Exquisite Corpse. It was the first book of Poppy’s I ever read.  It’s about two gay serial killers who meet each other and become romantically involved – and eventually kill and cannibalize together.  Strange, odd, and bizarre?  You betcha.  There’s some really disturbing stuff in here, but believe or not, it’s written very well and there’s a good story in here.  Pretty creepy stuff that will scare you and make you stomach churn.

It’s also just one of those books that’s hard to forget.  I can still vividly remember some of the scenes in it, although I probably don’t want to. The book disturbed me and made me sick so much that I had to give it away, for fear that I’d want to read it again. Believe me…once was enough!

Sadly, Poppy doesn’t write anymore.  Having only read two of her books, I still own some of her early stuff and plan to read it one day.

But if you are ever in the mood for something mentally sickening and disturbing, give this book a read.  It’s great!  LOL
