Herbs In My Folgers

Being a regular Folgers coffee drinker, I love the Folgers Smooth blend and have been obsessing over finding something to do with the nifty plastic red containers the coffee comes in.  I have been using one to store popcorn kernels in.  Someone told me they are good for paint too – not for storing paint but more for use while you are painting.  I guess you could also use them for storing nails, nuts and bolts, dry pasta, and other goodies too.

During this year’s first trip to Thies Farm and Nursery, we bought several herbs to plant in our flower beds.  A worker there told us it was still too cold to put them out though.  We probably should have waited, but we bought them anyway. They were too dry in their lil cups so I thought they might need to be transplanted into larger containers with some nice potting soil.  And guess what I thought would make the perfect herb pots until the weather gets a bit warmer?

We have basil, pineapple sage, spearmint, peppermint, rosemary, and lemon balm.  The rosemary (2nd from the left) was definitely NOT doing well in it’s little container.  I hope it cheers up.  But the others seem to be hanging on nicely.  I hope they enjoy the larger space and fresh dirt.  And I hope I can transplant them outside very very soon.  We heard that bees and butterflies like these particular herbs because of their smells, but that they also detract flies and mosquitoes.  I’ll keep you posted on  their progress.

For now, I was so happy to finally put all my Folgers containers to use!

  1. My hubby uses ours in our shed for nails and brushes and stuff like that. Your usage is prettier.

We recently got a Keurig coffee machine. The coffee tastes great, and it’s super convenient to be able to make one cup at a time, but the cups aren’t recyclable. This bothers me. But looking at this, I’m thinking they’d be the perfect size for seedlings. Hmm…

    • Thanks, R.J.

Those would be good for seedlings! I’ve also heard people re-using yogurt cups or Dole fruit cups for that. A coworker uses yogurt cups as snack cups for her small kids.
